Romantic Genre research

There are typical conventions of a romantic film, such as the following:

  • One of the characters are poor: To create a distance between the love couple is to seperate them by having them in different statuses or classes to each other. Therefore, the plot would be to find ways to be with each other again, despite relative/ friends/ society pulls them apart. For example, Romeo and Juliet is a classic example where both of the characters arefrom either Montague or Capulet and are sworn by enemies.
  •  Usually the character's go seperate ways, however they do reunite at the end to form the 'happy ending'. This can be effective in romantic films because it could be what the audience want to see and by ending happily there could be a sense of hope for them, rather than ending in a despairing way.
  • The Damsel in Distress: These type of films usually involve the use of a male character who is a hero, and saves a female character in a complex situaiton/ or situation which may harm the female protagonist.
  • The script may first be involving one character that we think the love bond should be with that personl However, it is unravelled that in fact they are the wrong person and the right person comes along later where again it ends in a typical happy/ cliche way.
  • Often a voiceover can be used to gain what one character actually feels and give us more detail about a situation. This also can allow for a character to tell a past event or memory which has happened-giving us more insight into their mind and way of thinking,
  • They can include many different people's stories/ scenarios and can often combine them  together at the end. An example of this is the film New Years Eve (2011) where it shows  the lives of seven couples and singles in New York and then intertwine over the course of New Years Eve.
It also includes other conventions of romantic films where all characters go through struggles in the plot of film (i.e Lea Michele and Ashton Kutcher get stuck in elevator) however it ends happily for all characters at the end
